Abstract: A Modified Varri based fault detector for power system relaying application is proposed in this paper. The qualifier to detect the fault consists of two sliding windows of frequency measure and amplitude measure. The proposed method provides proper discrimination between pre fault and post fault conditions even in the presences of noise, harmonics and uncertainties present in the signals. Further the methodprovides relatively higher index values than other fault detection techniques. Various test signals are applied to test the proposed method and response is compared with conventional techniques. The proposed method is effective and can be used for fault classification in distance protection.
